MODULE 1: Intercultural Communication


WHAT IS INTERCULTURAL COMMUNICATION?

Intercultural communication is defined as situated communication between individuals or groups of different linguistic and cultural origins. Nurses and other healthcare professionals often work in MMHT which requires effective intercultural communication. Poor intercultural communication can lead to misunderstandings or patient safety incidents.

The aims for this Module are to enhance your awareness of the need to develop intercultural communication skills in nursing , the potential barriers which affect inter-cultural communication , being a tolerant active listener.

After completing the learning activities, you should have enhanced your ability to:

  • Understand  the characteristics of effective communication with people of different cultures;
  • Address and eliminate linguistic barriers to communication in health care settings;
  • Identify patients’ values, beliefs, behaviours, perceptions, and unique health care needs;
  • Be a culturally competent active listener
