MODULE 2: Multicultural communication in multiprofessional health care teams (MMHT)


What are multidisciplinary multicultural health teams?

Multidisciplinary multicultural health teams (MMHT) comprise of individuals from a diverse range of cultural backgrounds and from different disciplines, working together in a healthcare setting , caring for a diverse group of patients.

Effective intercultural communication is necessary when working within a MMHT, to enable staff to communicate effectively and prevent misunderstandings. Good team working can help to ensure better patient safety and avoid incidents.

Aims and Learning Outcomes

The aims for this Module are to enhance your awareness of:
  • respecting the different roles within the team including your own;
  • developing team spirit which includes the virtues of proper friendship, interdependence, concern for colleagues, encouragement and support;
  • sharing and broadening perspectives on multicultural multiprofessional communication in health care, and then synthesize key issues from the module.
After completing this week's activities you should have enhanced your:
  • knowledge of multiprofessional team members’ fields of competence;
  • knowledge of multicultural and multiprofessional teamwork;
  • skills in negotiating goals and plans for culturally competent and compassionate patient care within the multiprofessional team.
