Indigenous People

The United Nations has not adopted an official definition of 'indigenous people'. A modern understanding of the term 'indigenous' is based on a range of factors, such as:

  • Self-identification as an indigenous person that is accepted by the community of which the individual is a member
  • Historical continuity with pre-colonial or pre-settler societies
  • Strong links to territories and surrounding natural resources
  • Distinct social, economic and/or political systems
  • Distinct language, culture and beliefs
