Social norms

The social norm is a pattern, rule, model or prescription which is then adjusting and directing behaviours of individuals, groups or organizations. The types of norms are:

  • interdictions/restrictions- behaviours which are restricted and practicing them will lead to sanctions
  • recommendations-behaviours which are considered desirable and will be rewarded
  • methods/ways-technical norms, behaviour patterns applicable to a given situation
