3. Mass media reports of patient safety incidents

Welcome to the activity for Day 3 of this week. In total this activity should take approximately 1 hour to complete.

  1. Search the local or national newspapers or TV news websites in your country for the year 2016 to find reports of incidents where a patient suffered preventable harm, suffering or death and take notes on the following:
  2. Do the Questionnaire based on the content of the above chapter:
    1. Was the report on the main/front page or a small paragraph in the second or subsequent pages?
    2. Did the report provide facts?
    3. Was the information in the report sensationalized?
    4. Did the report contextualize the incident in relation to the number of incidents which happen every year?
    5. Was the report justifiably judgmental of the health service?
    6. Was blame put on the managers, the nurses, the doctors and/or, others?
    7. Did the report refer to the possible causes of the incident?
    8. Where any of the causes linked to poor communication among the team members involved?
    9. Where any of the causes linked to the ethnicity/ies of the patient/s and the staff?
  3. Write up and share your findings using this blog
  4. Read and comment on at least two of your peers' posts and if possible print some examples as to use them during tomorrow’s Webinar
