The ”IENE4” project aims to change the organisational culture by focussing on leadership through an innovative intervention based on role modelling principles. The intervention will address the critical role of senior managers and practitioners (board members, team leaders and teachers) in setting values, expectations and behaviours which promote culturally competent compassionate care.

The project will increase knowledge, skills, attitudes and experience of participants:

  • New knowledge about philosophical and religious basis of self compassion and culturally appropriate compassion for others, cultural similarities and differences;

  • Understanding compassion by healthcare leaders as culturally appropriate and compassionate role models;

  • Undertaking patients’ assessment of needs in a culturally competent and compassionate way;

  • Giving and receiving appropriate compassion;

  • Establishing compassionate therapeutic relationships;

  • Removing barriers and challenges of compassion;

  • Understanding cultural values and their influence on compassion beliefs and attitudes;

  • Creating clinical environments which are compassionate to staff and patients.

Nurses and health care professionals will enhance their level of professional preparation which facilitates employability and leadership, as a result of self assessment using the compassion measuring tool (CMT):

  • Trainers will increase the methodological skills for creating the necessary personalized learning and assessment documents for training or institutional administration purpose;

  • Leaders become positive role models in the use of culturally competent compassion to members of their teams and become constructive agents of change through their contributions to creating compassionate organisation cultures.
